The African Molecular Research Excellence Fellowship, organized by Inqaba Biotec was established to strengthen molecular biology and genomics capacity across West and Central Africa by equipping emerging scientists with practical, industry-relevant laboratory skills. Through an engaging blend of lectures and intensive hands-on laboratory training, the fellowship is helping to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in molecular research.
With a goal of training 500 scientists across Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and Senegal, the fellowship brings together students, researchers, and early-career scientists to develop competencies in essential molecular biology techniques. Participants receive practical instruction in DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis, sequencing technologies, and introductory bioinformatics, providing them with a strong foundation for modern genomics research.
The program emphasizes experiential learning, allowing participants to perform laboratory procedures under supervision using industry-standard protocols and molecular biology kits. Beyond the laboratory, the interactive lectures introduce participants to the principles behind these techniques and their applications in research, diagnostics, agriculture, and public health.
The fellowship has made significant progress, with 142 scientists successfully trained and certified across Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon. In addition to enhancing technical competence, the initiative has strengthened partnerships between Inqaba Biotec and its strategic partners while increasing awareness of the company’s products, services, and technical solutions. Most importantly, participants have expressed confidence in applying the acquired skills to their research and have committed to sharing this knowledge by mentoring colleagues and students within their institutions and networks.
Like many capacity-building initiatives, the fellowship has encountered valuable learning opportunities. The training is being delivered in multiple cohorts to ensure the quality of hands-on sessions. Participants also noted that the three-day program was intensive, suggesting that extending the duration could allow for deeper practical engagement and improved knowledge retention.
Despite these challenges, the fellowship continues to demonstrate the growing demand for high-quality genomics training across Africa. The enthusiasm, dedication, and collaborative spirit shown by participants reaffirm the importance of investing in local scientific capacity. As the program expands toward its goal of training 500 scientists, it is contributing to a stronger network of molecular researchers equipped to address Africa’s most pressing scientific and public health challenges.
The success of the African Molecular Research Excellence Fellowship reflects the shared commitment of Inqaba Biotec and its partners, to advancing genomics education and research across the continent. By empowering emerging scientists with practical skills and fostering lasting collaborations, the fellowship is helping shape the future of African genomics; one scientist at a time.
