What is a Section 20 Permit?
A Section 20 permit is issued by the Directorate: Animal Health of the South African Department of Agriculture to authorise certain research or investigations involving animals, animal-derived materials, microorganisms, parasites or agents that may cause or spread animal disease. The permit is issued under Section 20 of the Animal Diseases Act, 1984 (Act No. 35 of 1984).
You may need to obtain a Section 20 permit before submitting samples to Inqaba Biotec when your project involves:
- Research into an animal disease or parasite;
- Collecting, possessing, transporting or testing animal samples for research purposes;
- Working with bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasites or other organisms capable of spreading animal disease;
- Using animal tissues, organs, bodily fluids, antigens or other animal-derived biological materials in research; or
- Developing or evaluating a diagnostic test, biological product, vaccine, treatment or remedy intended for animal health applications.
Please discuss your project and testing requirements with the laboratory prior to applying for the Section 20 permit and submitting samples.
